One woman’s desperate fight to keep a roof over her head. Underneath, it’s a social drama about poverty, survival, and the impossible odds stacked against people like Lynette (Vanessa Kirby).
It’s an ok film overall: tense in moments, messy in others, occasionally more ambitious than effective.
But then comes the finale.
The confrontation between Lynette and her mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is the kind of scene that elevates an entire movie. Kirby, fiery and raw, throws herself into years of bottled-up rage and desperation. Leigh, on the other hand, gives a masterclass in restraint, she’s cold, distant, and quietly devastating.
So while Night Always Comes doesn’t always sustain its tension, it delivers one of the most powerful ending scenes of the year. It’s worth watching just to see Kirby and Leigh go head-to-head.
