I feel like Leonardo DiCaprio has been around for almost every stage of my film-watching life. From the days when Titanic made him a global heartthrob to the more recent performances that won him respect as one of the greatest actors alive, he’s never really disappeared from the spotlight. With his new film One Battle After Another already being called one of his best, it feels like the right time to look back at the roles that built his reputation.

Below are my favourite 7 films from him, ranked in order.

7. Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019)

DiCaprio shines as a fading TV actor struggling with insecurity and self-doubt. His trailer meltdown is both hilarious and heartbreaking, showing his gift for comedy and vulnerability. It’s a role that proves he doesn’t mind poking fun at himself while still delivering depth.

6. The Departed (2006)

As an undercover cop, DiCaprio captures raw fear and desperation in every scene. His paranoia feels so real you can almost feel his pulse racing through the screen. It’s one of his most intense roles, and it anchors Scorsese’s modern crime masterpiece.

5. Titanic (1997)

The role that made him a global star, “Jack” is timeless as the ultimate romantic hero. DiCaprio’s sincerity gave the love story real weight, turning a blockbuster spectacle into an emotional journey. For many of us, this was the first time we saw what he could do.

4. Revolutionary Road (2008)

Reuniting with Kate Winslet, he played a man chasing dreams but trapped by his own emptiness. It’s a painfully honest performance that feels even sharper when you’re older and understand the weight of compromise. Often overlooked, but easily one of his best.

3. Shutter Island (2010)

DiCaprio carried the whole psychological thriller on his shoulders. He blends toughness with deep vulnerability, creating a character haunted by guilt and grief. Even when you know the twist, his performance still cuts deep.

2. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Jordan Belfort is DiCaprio completely unleashed: manic, vulgar and endlessly entertaining. His energy dominates every frame, mixing chaos with comedy in a way no other actor could. It’s an act that proves he can go bigger and bolder than anyone.

1. The Revenant (2015)

The role that finally brought him the Oscar and rightfully so. As Hugh Glass, DiCaprio relied on physicality, silence and sheer endurance to tell the story. It’s a performance built on survival and pain and it’s the ultimate proof of his dedication to the craft.

For me, these 7 films capture why DiCaprio is more than just a great actor, he’s a legend. He’s never settled for easy choices, always pushing himself into roles that test his limits. From romantic hero to broken survivor, he’s given us performances that stick for decades. And now, with One Battle After Another, it feels like he’s still raising the bar.
